Our Impact

Family Service creates long-term, intergenerational change within our communities.

Our work spans across the five social determinants of health.

We work to help people where they are now, and help them develop a sustainable path for future well-being.

Family Service’s programs prepare children to be school ready, encourage youth to stay in school, support home-bound older adults in maintaining their independence, empower people to stabilize their finances, and transform individuals and families to strengthen our communities. By having programs across the five pillars of social determinants of health — economic stability, education, health and healthcare, neighborhood supports, and social and community engagement – we provide support across different facets of people’s lives.

COVID-19 Impact

Throughout the pandemic, Family Service remained open with all of our services completing their sessions and curriculum.

We exist to help people in times of crisis and need. COVID-19 threw into stark light the challenges many in our community had already been experiencing, and it only exacerbated these challenges. We journey with our clients, helping them go from crisis mode to living a happy, healthy, stable life.

Family Service remains the family our community counts on.

At the height of COVID-19:

  • We helped an average of 1,900 families weekly
  • We saw an 800% increase in emergency assistance requests
  • We conducted weekly touch bases with our families.
Together, we can ensure the families of our community are happy, healthy, and stable.

Making a Difference

Ms. Oreida struggled to engage with each of her three children’s online learning and did not have enough resources to dedicate to each of their learning needs. The family arranged to come to the Family Service Best Buy Teen Tech Center daily for the kids to each have their own computers and activities to complete in-between online sessions.

Saturday at 11 PM, a dad calls scared and worried for his teenage daughter. Most centers are closed due to COVID-19, and he wanted a face-to-face counseling session. Our counselors spoke with him and his daughter that night, ensuring they felt safe and secure. Sunday morning, we met with them for an emergency counseling session to help ease anxiety and suicidal thoughts the daughter was having. We are continuing weekly meetings with the daughter and family sessions with the dad.

A single mother of one of our youth education students was exposed to COVID-19. She quarantined in the bedroom of her home, trying to ensure her children stayed healthy. Our Family Service team members delivered groceries, educational activities, and supplies for the family on the curb as well as conducted weekly check-in calls. The mother cried with each phone call, this time with tears of thanks.

[With Marian], I feel like I have a friend and someone there. I have no family, it’s just me and my kids, and she feels like family... The resources, the advice, the help. Whatever I need, she will help me, if she can’t help me, she helps me find someone who can. I didn’t know there was so much available. If I knew then what I know now, I probably wouldn’t have relapsed and gone through what I went through. I have hope. I have a future. To know I have someone there with me while I go through my journey and help me get back on my feet is priceless.
