Helping Children Cope with Divorce is a four-hour course designed to strengthen the parent-child relationship.
The course provides parents with the tools to better understand and meet the needs of their children during this transitional family period.

Divorcing parents are not in this alone. There are resources for developing a new family routine, navigating co-parenting, and discussing the new dynamic as a family such as Sesame Street “dealing with divorce.”
Children’s long-term exposure to parental conflict has a lifelong impact on their mental health, their future relationships, and their brain development. Providing strong support through co-parenting can help your child build a stronger future.

The seminar is designed for parents to help them understand and meet their children’s needs during the divorce process.
How-to advice and practical guidance provided throughout the course help lessen the impact of divorce on both the children and the parents.
Divorce or parental separation creates change. Helping Children Cope with Divorce is a nationally-acclaimed program given by trained and qualified professionals which helps you navigate that change.

The seminar teaches:

- The different concerns and needs of infants, toddlers, elementary, middle, and high school children
- Tips for helping children cope with divorce or parental separation
- Pitfalls to avoid during the process
- Community resources to help the entire family during the transition
Who Should Attend
Since divorce has proven to be so stressful for children, the District Court Judges of Bexar County require divorcing parents to attend Helping Children Cope with Divorce.
Though it is required for all parents who are legally divorcing, we urge any parents who are separating to attend. Helping Children Cope with Divorce helps anyone with a changing household dynamic. 90% of participants feel the class helps them understand their children and what they might be going through.
To help increase access for our community, the seminar is provided in English and Spanish.
Requirements and Fees
Helping Children Cope with Divorce fulfills the Bexar County requirement for parents seeking a divorce to attend a parenting class.
Fee:
The course is $35.00 per person.
Checks or money orders must be made payable to Family Service and mailed with registration form to the above address.
Reduced fees are available for veterans and participants receiving aid listed below.
For veterans and spouses of veterans, the fee for the seminar is $25.00 per person with a current Military ID or DD2214.
A $20.00 fee per person is available for participants who provide proof they are receiving one of the following:
- Legal Aid
- Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
- Pro Bono Attorney Services
*The reduced fee will not be granted unless proof is included with your registration form.
How to Register
Helping Children Cope with Divorce is offered on two Saturdays a month and two Tuesdays a month in English and once a month in Spanish (if there are enough interested participants).

You must pre-register and pre-pay two weeks in advance for your chosen class.
Register online or by mail. For the mail-in application, complete our registration form, mailing it or dropping it off at our main office (address below both for mailing and dropping off in person).
Complete both sides of the registration form and mail it or drop it off at the address listed below with a check or money order. We do not accept cash for the seminar.

You will receive a confirmation phone call within one week of receipt of your registration, and we’ll inform you which seminar you are to attend.
Reminders:
- Please arrive 15 minutes early for sign-in.
- Sessions begin on time. No one is admitted after the session begins.
- Fees are non-refundable. No shows are required to re-register.
- Child care is not provided. Please do not bring children to the seminar.
- You must bring a photo ID to your seminar.

We offer the seminar on different times and days to help accommodate various schedules. Our current classes are:

Spanish
We do offer a Spanish-speaking only class. It will be held one Wednesday a month at Family Service’s Northeast Office. The class will only be offered if there are enough registrants. If you are interested in attending our Spanish speaking class, please contact us about availability.
Whichever class you choose to attend, you must pre-pay and pre-register for it.

Where should I go to attend my Helping Children Cope with Divorce class?
Depending on which day you registered will be a different location:
Tuesday classes are held at Family Service’s Northeast Office at 4245 Centergate St, San Antonio, TX 78217. Saturday classes are held at Family Service’s main office located at 702 San Pedro Ave.

Helping Children Cope with Divorce is held two Tuesdays a month and two Saturdays. When you register, you have a preference of class day. Once we receive your payment, you will be assigned to a class and notified of the date and time.
Can I attend if a family member is taking the class?
We encourage family members, friends, and support systems to take the class with individuals to help them through this transitional period. All in attendance of the class must register and pay to attend.
Can I bring my children?
Childcare is currently not provided during the seminar. Children will not be allowed inside the class with you. Please arrange for childcare during your seminar.

Classes are held on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Your specific date will be determined once you have registered and are assigned a class. A follow-up call will be made to you once your registration is received.
